Today’s ACIM lesson, #314, I seek a future different from the past, is the place where faith unties us (me) from what I think happened.  No longer am I tethered to the way things have always been.  I am freed to move forward in love that allows fear to fall away into the nothingness that it truly is.  “Fear is not of the present, but only of the past and future, which do not exist. There is no fear in the present when each instant stands clear and separated from the past, without its shadow reaching out into the future. Each instant is a clean, untarnished birth, in which the Son of God emerges from the past into the present. And the present extends forever. It is so beautiful and so clean and free of guilt that nothing but happiness is there. No darkness is remembered, and immortality and joy are now.”  It is a beautiful thing to be liberated from the tyranny of fear.  It is refreshing to realize that the future can be different from the past.  In fact, it can’t help can be different because as time appears to move forward, so does evolution.  You can never go home again.  Personally, I am not the same person I was at age 15, or 25, or 35 or 50.  None of the cells in our bodies are the same.  The technology is different.  The politics are different.  What was then has changed what is now.

From last year’s writing:

Lesson 314 ACIM

Different from the Past

Humans resist change.  The fear of the unknown can be crippling, so often we will stick with the “devil we know” rather than risk finding out what’s behind door number two.  And yet, sometimes we’ve reached our limit.  Sometimes, we’ve just had enough.  I mean, haven’t you ever arrived at a point where you just voted for change because you were sick to death of the status quo?

There are two prerequisites for change, in my opinion.  First, we must believe it is possible.  Second, we must take steps in that direction.  We have to quit recreating the past by projecting it into the future.  This requires letting go of blame and guilt. You see, so often we think we know what’s going to happen that we make it happen.  Our fears become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  That’s ego, folks, and it’s dangerous stuff.  (Because ego specializes in danger/death/destruction/fear  “The ego is therefore capable of suspiciousness at best and viciousness at worst. That is its range. It cannot exceed it because of its uncertainty. And it can never go beyond it because it can never be certain.”)

When you don’t believe something is possible, it’s really hard to allow it to become your reality.  You tend to work against yourself, or at least I do.  I say I want a fat bank account, but neglect to save.  I say I want to lose weight, but fail to pass on the butter when it is on the table tempting me with its deliciousness.  In metaphysics, we refer to this as the ability to “embody” that which we want to become.  Today’s A Course in Miracles lesson is about embracing a future different from the past.

Personally speaking, the hardest part about that is believing that things can be different than I have known them to be.

Today’s lesson:

Lesson 314

I seek a future different from the past.

From new perception of the world there comes a future very different from the past. The future now is recognized as but extension of the present. Past mistakes can cast no shadows on it, so that fear has lost its idols and its images, and being formless, it has no effects. Death will not claim the future now, for life is now its goal, and all the needed means are happily provided. Who can grieve or suffer when the present has been freed, extending its security and peace into a quiet future filled with joy?

Father, we were mistaken in the past, and choose to use the present to be free. Now do we leave the future in Your Hands, leaving behind our past mistakes, and sure that You will keep Your present promises, and guide the future in their holy light.

The awesome thing about the Course is that it gives us tools to change things by teaching that the past never happened.  Now, that can be a difficult concept to wrap your brain around.  I mean, if the past never happened does that mean we can change the results of the recent election?  Does it mean that Roe v Wade isn’t on the books, that segregation wasn’t the black eye I think it was, that 9/11 didn’t destroy the twin towers and thousands of lives along with it?

I told you, challenging.

Declaring the past never happened is not sloughing off its effects, it is letting go of the tentacles that bind us to those effects.  It is recognizing that I give everything the meaning it has for me (lesson 2).  Guilt and blame are not inherent qualities of anything; ego assigns those.  God wraps it in love.

Using the present to be free requires a willingness to forgive the past.  It requires a willingness to transform what I think it means.  It is embracing inclusivity rather than casting out the guilty and unworthy.

God is kinder and gentler than ego.  He does not entertain ideas of condemnation and guilt.   “…The belief in guilt must lead to the belief in hell, and always does.”

“The Holy Spirit teaches thus: There is no hell.”

7 The Holy Spirit teaches thus: There is no hell. Hell is only what the ego has made of the present. The belief in hell is what prevents you from understanding the present, because you are afraid of it. The Holy Spirit leads as steadily to Heaven as the ego drives to hell. For the Holy Spirit, Who knows only the present, uses it to undo the fear by which the ego would make the present useless. There is no escape from fear in the ego’s use of time. For time, according to its teaching, is nothing but a teaching device for compounding guilt until it becomes all-encompassing, demanding vengeance forever.

8 The Holy Spirit would undo all of this now. Fear is not of the present, but only of the past and future, which do not exist. No darkness is remembered, and immortality and joy are now.

9 This lesson takes no time. For what is time without a past and future? It has taken time to misguide you so completely, but it takes no time at all to be what you are. Begin to practice the Holy Spirit’s use of time as a teaching aid to happiness and peace. Take this very instant, now, and think of it as all there is of time. Nothing can reach you here out of the past, and it is here that you are completely absolved, completely free and wholly without condemnation. From this holy instant wherein holiness was born again you will go forth in time without fear, and with no sense of change with time.

“The Holy Spirit would undo all of this now. Fear is not of the present, but only of the past and future, which do not exist.”

To declare that “I seek a future different from the past” is to embrace the now, to embrace Heaven, to choose the Holy Instant and miracles/love (which are “your natural inheritance”).  It’s already here because all there is is now.  How are we choosing to use it?  To serve the ego or to listen to the Holy Spirit?

I seek a new perception.  I seek a future different from the past.  I believe in the evolution of consciousness.  I believe in that love always wins because God is everywhere present and my failure to notice that CANNOT evict Him from the equation.  I can put myself in hell by choosing to listen to the voice of fear (ego) rather than the  Voice for Love (Holy Spirit) but none of it can change the changeless.  None of it can alter God’s will which being love is perfect happiness.

(The game is rigged.)

I believe the future can and will be different from the past because as I come to know God better and better, as I come to listen with ears that are willing to let go of what I think I know, I fall into a deeper faith; one that trusts God; one that wants Heaven.

I stand in Truth that cannot be swayed by illusion.  God loves all His children and He has never condemned us to hell.

It is up to us to “seek a future different from the past.”  It is up to us to choose Heaven.

Namaste, my friends, Namaste.
