Today’s ACIM lesson, #309, I will not fear to look within today, is the recognition that we are innocent.  That is a difficult concept for ego to accept, for it can name countless instances that “prove” guilt.  But the Course tells us, “You are not guiltless in time, but in eternity.”  Time is part of the illusion.  “You have “sinned” in the past, but there is no past.” All of which is quite hard for us (me) to wrap our (my) head(s) around.  The “past” is over.  It doesn’t exist except in stories and those can and do change with perception and ego normalizes things so that what once upon a time things that seemed shocking are now just part of the status quo.  When we know who we really are, it is no longer frightening to look within.  We can own our mistakes and forgive ourselves for them.  We can reclaim the innocence that God knows is the truth of who we are once we let go of ideas of right and wrong, good and bad, guilt and innocence.  It is the path to returning to peace, I will not fear to look within today because I am ready to accept the truth of who I am.  I am as God created me.  And so are you.  From last year’s writing:

I will not fear to look within today. ACIM Lesson 309

Look Within

One of the primary themes of A Course in Miracles is innocence.  It is a theme that causes much consternation among those who have yet to experience the miraculous power of innocence because ego is quite keen on holding “the guilty” responsible.  Of course, that’s everyone; all of us are guilty in the ego’s book.  To ensure the prolonging of guilt, ego specializes in hiding innocence by persuading us it’s not safe to look within.  Rather than see what’s there, It projects out the stuff it wants to disown, the things it denies are it so it can claim superiority.   (It loves comparing — “My house is never that dirty.”  “Did you see how much cleavage she was sporting?”  _______ Insert judgmental comment here.) All of this can make it easy to miss ego’s ulterior motive which is to keep us listening to its lies.  Or else it chooses inferiority — making us feel like worthless pieces of crap because that does a great job of keeping us from looking too closely, too.  Either way, innocence is not something it believes in.  If we believed in our own innocence, if we recognized the truth about ourselves, then ego would lose its stronghold.  “The dedication to death and to its sovereignty is but the solemn vow, the promise made in secret to the ego never to lift this veil, not to approach it, nor even to suspect that it is there. This is the secret bargain made with the ego to keep what lies beyond the veil forever blotted out and unremembered. “

The part of us that wants to pretend it is separate from God does feel guilty.  It’s like we believe our delusion could actually make that happen.  But this lesson reminds us that such an idea is delusion.  “I fear to look within because I think I made another will that is not true, and made it real. Yet it has no effects.”  The Course teaches that we are afraid to look because we think God will get pissed and disown us all.  That can’t happen, but that is the lie ego tells us in an attempt to keep us in the dark and keep us from looking at our fears.

The lesson:

Lesson 309

I will not fear to look within today.

Within me is eternal innocence, because it is God’s Will that it be there forever and forever. I, His Son, whose will is limitless as is His Own, can will no change in this. For to deny my Father’s Will is to deny my own. To look within is but to find my will as God created it, and as it is. I fear to look within because I think I made another will that is not true, and made it real. Yet it has no effects. Within me is the Holiness of God. Within me is the memory of Him.

The step I take today, my Father, is my sure release from idle dreams of sin. Your altar stands serene and undefiled. It is the holy altar to my Self, and there I find my true Identity.

Here’s the thing, the Course isn’t telling us that none of us was ever mistaken.  But we are talking about eternity here and in eternity, we are innocent because that is God’s will.

3 As you look upon yourself and judge what you do honestly, you may be tempted to wonder how you can be guiltless. Yet consider this: You are not guiltless in time, but in eternity. You have “sinned” in the past, but there is no past. Always has no direction. Time seems to go in one direction, but when you reach its end it will roll up like a long carpet spread along the past behind you, and will disappear. As long as you believe the Son of God is guilty you will walk along this carpet, believing that it leads to death. And the journey will seem long and cruel and senseless, for so it is.”

The reason forgiveness is so important is because it returns us to the truth of who and what we really are.  By embracing forgiveness, which is really the recognition that in eternity nothing has happened., we can notice that this stuff revolving around guilt is an illusion.  It can’t be “real” because it is not eternal.  Only the changeless is forever.  The Course says, “What is forgiveness but a willingness that truth be true? What can remain unhealed and broken from a unity which holds all things within itself? There is no sin. And every miracle is possible the instant that the Son of God perceives his wishes and the Will of God are one.”

There is a whole section in the Course dedicated to “What is Forgiveness?”  It says, “Forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God. “

So today is dedicated to releasing the idea of guilt and seeing the eternal innocence that is God’s will.  It is coming a step closer to accepting who we really are.  We are the Holy Son of God Himself.  We are loved and we are innocent.

Once we know that, once we recognize that we are NOT what ego told us we were, once we are brave enough to look with then it becomes more and more difficult to choose anything that is out of alignment with that innocence.  And that is how the world gets saved.

Namaste, my friends, Namaste.
