The Great Example

The Great Example

It is Easter Sunday: a very Holy day in Christian religion.  Since I became a Religious Scientist (NOT Scientology!) it is a day I had trouble with for years because in our believe system, Christ is seen as the great example not the great exception. I love A Course in Miracles because it has bridged the gap for me, allowing me to reconcile the role Jesus plays in this whole picture.  The Course puts it this way:

“ An elder brother is entitled to respect for his greater experience, and obedience for his greater wisdom. He is also entitled to love because he is a brother, and to devotion if he is devoted. It is only my devotion that entitles me to yours. There is nothing about me that you cannot attain. I have nothing that does not come from God. The difference between us now is that I have nothing else. This leaves me in a state which is only potential in you.

4 “No man cometh unto the Father but by me” does not mean that I am in any way separate or different from you except in time, and time does not really exist. The statement is more meaningful in terms of a vertical rather than a horizontal axis. You stand below me and I stand below God. In the process of “rising up,” I am higher because without me the distance between God and man would be too great for you to encompass. I bridge the distance as an elder brother to you on the one hand, and as a Son of God on the other. My devotion to my brothers has placed me in charge of the Sonship, which I render complete because I share it. This may appear to contradict the statement “I and my Father are one,” but there are two parts to the statement in recognition that the Father is greater.

The thing the Course helped me with was the understanding that we are all Sons of God, and yes, Jesus was the great example.  I know there are Christians who take exception to this.  As I child I was taught you had to “ask Jesus into your heart” otherwise if you hadn’t, when He returned you would be left behind.  I no longer believe in the rapture, which is a fear-based thought system.  I’m a Course girl.  I believe this:

13The message of the crucifixion is perfectly clear:

Teach only love, for that is what you are.

Today’s A Course in Miracles lesson is a call back to that.  I am only interested in love.  I am only interested in lessons that bring me back to that awareness.

Lesson 87

Our review today will cover these ideas:

(73) I will there be light.

I will use the power of my will today. It is not my will to grope about in darkness, fearful of shadows and afraid of things unseen and unreal. Light shall be my guide today. I will follow it where it leads me, and I will look only on what it shows me. This day I will experience the peace of true perception.

These forms of this idea would be helpful for specific applications:

This cannot hide the light I will to see.
You stand with me in light, [name].
In the light this will look different.

(74) There is no will but God’s.

I am safe today because there is no will but God’s. I can become afraid only when I believe there is another will. I try to attack only when I am afraid, and only when I try to attack can I believe that my eternal safety is threatened. Today I will recognize that all this has not occurred. I am safe because there is no will but God’s.

These are some useful forms of this idea for specific applications:

Let me perceive this in accordance with the Will of God.
It is God’s Will you are His Son, [name], and mine as well.
This is part of God’s Will for me, however I may see it.

I will there be light.  As I bring my prejudices surrounding ideology to this holy day, I remind myself that it is called A Course in Miracles not The Course in Miracles, despite the fact that its students frequently call is “the Course.”  It is not “the” only path.  So despite my beliefs that their beliefs (as in many Christians) are “incorrect,” it is not about making anyone right or wrong.  The Course teaches that, for Heaven’s sake!  It is about teaching love.  We all have free will.  We get to do life the way we want.  My role is to accept what is in front of me to do and to do that in the kindest, gentlest, most loving way possible.

The message the crucifixion was intended to teach was that it is not necessary to perceive any form of assault in persecution, because you cannot be persecuted….

6As I have said before, “As you teach so shall you learn.” If you react as if you are persecuted, you are teaching persecution. This is not a lesson a Son of God should want to teach if he is to realize his own salvation. Rather, teach your own perfect immunity, which is the truth in you, and realize that it cannot be assailed. Do not try to protect it yourself, or you are believing that it is assailable.

I will there be light means that within any situation, I am asking that I see the perfection God placed there.  Love is always there.  If I don’t see its presence, then I am not fulfilling my role.  “Only what you have not given can be lacking in any situation.”  It always goes back to me not looking outside myself for answers. (“The sole responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept the Atonement for himself.”)  I will there be light is the prayer to see what God placed before me.  It is the letting go attacking God’s plan.

There is no will but God’s.  This, quite simply is the recognition of my safety.  I am perfectly safe because there is no will but God’s.  It is only my ideas that there could be other wills that attack God’s plan.  It is basically an attempt to make God wrong.  It is saying, “Look, You may have the big picture and know exactly what each and every person involved needs, but from my limited perspective I still have it figured out better than You do, Dude.”  In God’s plan, everyone is getting exactly what they need to return to the awareness of oneness.  Everyone is being given the opportunity for healing.  Goodness is present.  Love is present.  Joy is present.  I am a teacher for God, and if I notice the lack of any of those things, my responsibility is to listen to the Voice for God and do what He would have me do.  I am a part of God’s plan for salvation.  The Course says, “All are called but few choose to listen.”  This is not admonishing us.  We have free will.  We get to choose if we want to experience life painfully or joyously. But the game is rigged; f we choose not to learn now, we are going to learn later; we are going to learn eventually.

It’s a required course.

So, on this Easter day, when millions celebrate the resurrection of Christ, I pause and give thanks for these teachings that bring home to God.  I give thanks for the awareness that my role here is to teach love.

7Your resurrection is your reawakening. I am the model for rebirth, but rebirth itself is merely the dawning on your mind of what is already in it. God placed it there Himself, and so it is true forever. I believed in it, and therefore accepted it as true for me. Help me to teach it to our brothers in the name of the Kingdom of God, but first believe that it is true for you, or you will teach amiss. My brothers slept during the so-called “agony in the garden,” but I could not be angry with them because I knew I could not be abandoned.

I cannot be abandoned either.  I am never without God for that is not His will. The Course says this:

3O my child, if you knew what God wills for you, your joy would be complete! And what He wills has happened, for it was always true. When the light comes and you have said, “God’s Will is mine,” you will see such beauty that you will know it is not of you. Out of your joy you will create beauty in His Name, for your joy could no more be contained than His. The bleak little world will vanish into nothingness, and your heart will be so filled with joy that it will leap into Heaven, and into the Presence of God. I cannot tell you what this will be like, for your heart is not ready. Yet I can tell you, and remind you often, that what God wills for Himself He wills for you, and what He wills for you is yours.

God’s will is mine.  There is no will but God’s.  I am perfectly safe, perfectly loved and perfectly joyous.  The light has come.  The light has come.

Happy Easter, everyone.

Namaste, my friends, Namast
