A Course in Miracles

The Source

“Help me to perform whatever miracles you want of me today.”

I am A Course in Miracles junkie.  Nothing in this world makes me feel more deeply connected to the ever-present Love that pulses the universe than reading the Course.  Now, as I read this new CE version of the Course, I find myself falling even further in love with the material.  There is something about reading the language Jesus used when instructing Helen Schucman that is so draped in love and caring.  Since there is no online CE version, I find myself at the referring to the Urtext, which more closely parallels the CE version.  It begins with instructions about miracles.  We rushed through this section in our Tuesday night class when we read the  first chapter, but I now realize that the first three principals were intended to be reviewed throughout the day, not unlike what we do with the daily lessons.

From the Urtext:

It is crucial to say first that A Course In Miracles is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what to take when. It is just because you are not ready to do what you should elect to do that time exists at all.
(You will see miracles thru your hands thru me. You should begin each day with the prayer “Help me to perform whatever miracles you want of me today.”)

  1. The first thing to remember about miracles is that there is no order of difficulty among them. One is not harder or bigger than another. They are all the same.
  2. Miracles do not matter. They are quite unimportant.
  3. They occur naturally as an expression of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.
  4. This explains the first point related to the lack of order. All expressions of love are maximal.
b.This is why the “thing in itself” does not matter. The only thing that matters is the Source, and this is far beyond human evaluation.

Somehow, in the reading of this, it occurs to me how important it is to stay rooted in love.  The interesting thing, to me, is that when love is my goal, the rest is easy.  When I refuse to allow fear to enter the equation, then I no longer gets confuses about responsibility.  “The clarification of the goal belongs at the beginning, for it is this which will determine the outcome.”  When my goal is love it stops mattering how I think my words are received.  (Ego cares, the Self doesn’t.) This is not to say that I shouldn’t notice when another is hurt or upset, only that as long as I am listening (“What would You have me do? Where would You have me go? What would You have me say, and to whom?”) then I have done what I am supposed to do.  I need only be clear about my goal and then get quiet enough to listen for instructions.

(Which FYI, I find challenging to do when I am feeling stressed.)

There is no order of difficulty in miracles because love is easy.  Connection to God is easy.  This is why A Course in Miracles is really an undoing, not a doing.  We already ARE connected.  We already have the Holy Spirit within us.  The thing that blocks our awareness of it is fear and doubt.  But this Course, this mind-training is about coming to trust that God has our backs.  Illusions come and go, but the eternal, the changeless Source is constant.

“The only thing that matters is the Source, and this is far beyond human evaluation.”

In later versions of the Course (the “The Foundation for Inner Peace version), “Source” is not capitalized; it is written “source” which changes the intended meaning.

I am A Course in Miracles junkie, in love with the truth I find on its pages.  In studying it, I want to own that, to allow God to lead me.  I happily say, “Help me to perform whatever miracles you want of me today.”

In the beginning, Helen had her doubts.  She was embarrassed and fearful that maybe this “Voice” wasn’t to be trusted.  But she had listened to Bill Thetford when he had come to her hoping to resolve their differences.  She had agreed to help when he pleaded, “there must be a better way.”  Helen asks Jesus, “Would you regard this communication as a kind of miracle?” He answers, “There is nothing special or surprising about this at all. The ONE thing that happened was the Universal Miracle which was the experience of intense love that you have felt. (Don’t get embarrassed by the idea of love. Embarrassment is only a form of fear, and actually a particularly dangerous form because it reflects egocentricity. Do not feel guilty about the fact that you are doubting this. Just re-read them and their truth will come to you. I (I = Jesus Christ) love you, and I am not afraid or embarrassed or doubtful. MY strength will support you, so don’t worry and leave the rest to me. But when you see B (B = William “Bill” Thetford), be sure you tell him how much he helped you thru by giving you the right message, and don’t bother with worrying about how you received it. That doesn’t matter either. You were just afraid.)”

The Urtext explains, “(HS fearful in taxi about a communication which related Dave’s healing and Jonathan’s hernia. She thought it would be safer to dissociate the two. Instructions were: refer to point 1 and re-read NOW.)”

Last night, in our Twisted Minds (ACIM) group, we were reading about special relationships.  It is tempting to think of Helen’s relationship with Jesus (and don’t forget that in the beginning, she wasn’t even sure of the identity of the Voice) as special.  But thinking of it that way is really just the ego’s attempt to keep us from learning the Course.  The material it teaches is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary.” As we read last night, “The special relationship is the triumph of this confusion. It is a kind of union from which union is excluded, and the basis for the attempt at union rests on exclusion. What better example could there be of the ego’s maxim, ‘Seek but do not find’?”

So, it becomes important to remember “point 1”: 1. The first thing to remember about miracles is that there is no order of difficulty among them. One is not harder or bigger than another. They are all the same.”

It is what Helen was instructed to do.  I’s what we are instructed to do.

Helen was not special.  She was willing.  “ God will do His part if you will do yours, and His return in exchange for yours is the exchange of knowledge for perception. “

“All expressions of love are maximal.”

And God loves us, more than we can even fathom.  And that is why I am A Course in Miracles junkie.

Namaste, my friends, Namaste.
